I would bring real water shoes too as the river is rocky and not fun on bare feet. This is an extremely popular campground and is almost always completely booked. The Elkmont Campground is located around a 20 minute drive from Gatlinburg. Due to its central location and variety of amenities, Elkmont Campground tends to be heavily used during the summer vacation months and in October. You cannot get a generator waiver anymore, so if you need electricity overnight for a medical device, you need to reserve one of these sites. Pets are allowed at Elkmont but must be on a physical, max 6 foot leash at all times. There is no RV dump/fill station at Elkmont campground. The best beachy area is next to the main bridge leading from the ranger station to the west side of the campground (loops G- N and group sites). This section was known as Society Hill. All food, coolers, and equipment used to prepare and store food must be kept in a sealed vehicle or camping unit of solid, non-pliable material AT ALL TIMES when not in use. 3. And on some busy weekends in the late afternoon you can hit heavy traffic as people are returning to their hotels from the park so the drive can be an hour or more. RVs are still welcome in these areas. Twenty-five sites spread randomly throughout the campground are for tent campers only, plus there are 18 walk-in tent sites in the B Loop and 4 in the A Loop. All of these sites are located near accessible restrooms. Walk-in means that you park your car in a common lot and carry your gear up to 75 yards to the campsite as opposed to parking right next to your campsite. And it can be a great option for that rainy/overly cold day when you need something to entertain the kids. Although most sites will accommodate tents or RVs, extreme slope or length of driveway make certain sites more suitable for tents than RVs. This is one of the big complaints on TripAdvisor so I thought I would keep mentioning it so people arent surprised when they get to the campground. Once more for the people in the back- There are no electric/ water/ sewer hookups at any campsite in any of the campgrounds in the Smokies so leave the electric kettle/ coffee maker/ phone charger at home. The only drawback to this site is it is up some stairs from the parking area which can be annoying for carrying coolers back and forth. No generators are allowed in Loops A, B, L, M, and N. A few sites are located along the Little River and a smaller creek that runs through the middle of the campground. Most importantly, please keep in mind that the Smokies is a temperate rain forest and gets as much rain as the Pacific Northwest. Sites B21 through B24 are off by themselves, so if you want privacy, these are the ones to get. I really hope not as it was a great way to get between the park and Gatlinburg. Short but powerful afternoon thunderstorms in the summer are very common. One of my favorites is a local one called Hiking In The Smokies and it has excellent descriptions and mileage for all of the trails they have hiked in the park (and they have hiked a lot). To do so, check the office bulletin board for a list of campsites that are available FOR THAT NIGHT ONLY and pick from one of these. Others say it isnt bad at all but I would still err on the side of having deterrents. Sites B22, B23, and B25 are close to the parking lot. They are allowed anywhere cars can go so basically you can go all around the campground with your dog (or cat I guess) and to the trailheads, but not on the trails themselves. Considered now to be one of the hidden gems in the Smokies, visitors love exploring the abandoned area. The National Park Service website for the Smokies is the place to start. In order to transport the timber, Colonel Townsend built a railroad that connected the riverside logging site to his companys sawmill in Tuckaleechee Cove. If you are in an RV, avoid B11 due to an extremely sloped driveway. You need headlamps. This is a wonderful site as there aren't immediate neighbours on either side and the river is just beyond the tent pad. The Elkmont Historic District is a collection of preserved and not so preserved cabins leftover from Elkmonts early days in the early 1900s as a logging town and a resort for well- heeled Knoxvillians. Because the last trolley leaves Gatlinburg at 530pm, it is not an option if you want to go out for dinner but great if you want to head over to the Aquarium for the day or just get out of the campground on a rainy day without paying extortionate parking prices in Gatlinburg. To be safe, carry a rain jacket with you in your backpack at all times and dont leave your rainfly off your tent if you leave the campground for a few hours and its completely sunny with 0% chain of rain in the forecast. Youll turn here until you see the ranger station about 4 miles down the road. East Side of the Little River- The ranger station, campground store, and campsite loops A- F. The trailheads for the Nature trail, Little River trail, and Jakes Creek trail are also on this side as is the Elkmont Historic District, of which Daisy Town is the best preserved.
